How I coach

There are many effective coaching models which coaches choose to use to structure their coaching sessions. Using a model helps in a number of ways. It helps to provide a purpose to the session by defining an outcome at the beginning, preventing it becoming a 'chat' with no clear purpose. It can also be a prompt to ensure that the session stays 'on track'.

My experiences in coaching have allowed me to understand that sometimes rigid models are constraining. Although I use the model explained below as a guide through my coaching process, I will always place emphasis on responding to what your needs are at a particular point in time, placing that emphasis on the process of coaching itself rather than the model.

My GRAVE coaching model helps me (as coach) take you from goal setting at the start through to exploring where you are in relation to your goals, reality testing and action planning along the way.

Through the process it may not appear that I am using this structured model, although, if our discussions were analysed you would see key links to the model components. The beginning of every session is spent 'venting', allowing you to get anything 'off your chest' and we'll usually review your progress since we last spoke.

I will then help you identify what you want from the current session and then the rest of the session will flow. Yes, in essence we will go where you want to go, but the GRAVE model will be sitting in the background as my guideline as to what we need to achieve.

An important mention from the last step is that we could move around this model in any order. It is not a set script. The world around us continually changes and our priorities change. Events in our lives can also change our path. Moving around this model can help us keep the process relevant to your current situation.

GRAVE coaching model

Goal setting (session 1) - We start with careful consideration of what you want to achieve. This will include making sure that whatever it is has importance, and that there is value in achieving it.

R
eality testing (session 1) - A goal has to be something that we can reasonably make a “reality”. You have to be able to say, even if it is a tremendously large goal, that yes, it is entirely realistic. It can be done. This is in no way to say it shouldn’t be a big goal, but it must be realistic.
Action planning (session 2) - This is the step many miss because they focus on the outcome and forget all of the steps needed along the way. We will identify all the required actionable steps.

Validate success parameters (session 2 onwards) - Put simply, this stage will clearly define how you will know you have succeeded. It will paint a future picture.
Examine progress (session 3 onwards) - This stage is primarily the “check-in” on progress. That discussion could lead us back to previous stages (realising a previously set goal is not as important now, for example). This stage could be a full session or just a phone call. We’ll explore how you are going, and if the case, analyse whatever it is that is getting in the way of progress.
